In a notable development ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the wake of large-scale and deadly youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Tackle Youth Concerns
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which led to significant loss of life.
"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.
The late summer revolt was triggered by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of systemic graft in politics.
Details of the New Political Agreement
According to the formal agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political class. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.
Wider Government Consultations Taking Place
In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of leading political leaders. These talks involved former prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the uprising.
After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a collective responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
